Thelma M. McDowell, 95, departed this life on October 4, 2017, and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Thelma Marguerite McDowell, daughter of the late Rufus and Pleasie Jones was born July 11, 1922, in Hinds County, Mississippi where she also attended school.
Thelma gave her life to Christ at an early age and accepted Jesus into her heart. She attended Eden C.M.E Church in Carroll County, Mississippi growing up.
Thelma moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she met Marshall McDowell and was united in holy matrimony on December 6, 1948. Thelma was employed at IU Hospital where she retired after 33 years. Thelma joined Phillip’s Temple C.M.E Church in Indianapolis, Indiana where she served on the stewardess board for many years until her health began to fail.
Thelma was very fond of her pastors, Oliver D. Walker and Brian Walker and she loved her church. She enjoyed sitting on the porch reading her bible and talking with her friends. Thelma was always good company and many of her stories were shared over the occasional plate of chicken wings.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Rufus and Pleasie Jones, her only sister, Ellen Jones, and her beloved husband, Marshall.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory and uphold the family legacy: a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; close friends Iva Prather and Jacqueline Axon and many other friends.
