Silas H. Burgher, born on October 21, 1936, was originally from Carmel, Indiana, and resided in “Plantation City”, in northeastern Greene County, where he passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2018.
Si graduated from Carmel High School, and became a Horologist, graduating from Elgin Watchmaking School in 1956. In 1957, Si opened his first jewelry store in old downtown Carmel. Over the years, it became a successfully family business, which eventually closed in May, 2001, when Si retired and permanently moved to “Plantation City” and continued his tree and cattle business. Si also served in the U. S. Army.
Si was very active in the Carmel, and then the Bloomfield Rotary Club, and attended his last meeting there on Tuesday of the week he passed away. Si has nine Paul Harris Fellows to his name, which includes one awarded to each of his four children, and one awarded to a fellow Rotarian who served numerous terms as president of the Bloomfield Rotary Club. He twice shaved his amazing eyebrows to raise money to support the Rotary “Polio Plus” campaign.
He is survived by his loving wife, Amy, his son, Robert and wife Kara, his daughter, Carla Coyler, and her husband, Scott, his son, Silas “Sonny”, his former wife, Donna Burgher, and his son-in-law, Jeff Haake. Si also leaves behind seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Amber Ruth Burgher, and his daughter, Amber Kay Haake.
At Si’s request, there will be no viewing or funeral, however the family is planning a celebration of his life, a “Si-Labration”, at his beloved, “Blue and Gold Plantation”, on his birthday. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Bloomfield Rotary Club’s Education Foundation, at Farmer’s and Mechanics Federal Savings and Loan, 225 East Main Street, Bloomfield, IN 47424.
Si will be missed by his family, neighbors, and friends, and he will be remembered daily. CLEAR!!
