Robert Luther Shryock, 92, died June 8, 2017 in Indianapolis, IN. He was born August 2, 1924 in Gettysburg, PA, the son of Luther D. Shryock and Clara C. Shryock, née Hess.
Upon graduation from Gettysburg High School in 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps and served primarily in Newfoundland from 1943 to 1946 as a member of the marching band and camp newspaper editor. He returned to Gettysburg College where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1949, married Betty L. Thomas of Biglerville, PA on January 27, 1949 and became the manager of the college’s bookstore. In 1952, Bob and Betty moved to Toledo, Ohio where Bob became the bookstore manager at what was then called Toledo University. They moved to Sylvania, Ohio where they raised two sons. Bob retired in 1987 with notable service as President of the National Association of College Stores. He enjoyed taking long summer road trip family vacations to various destinations in the US but most always included a trip to Gettysburg to visit relatives and friends. Bob was an avid photographer and enjoyed taking lots of pictures of his travels and family activities, especially at holidays. Bob and Betty were enthusiastic bridge players and participated in various clubs with other couples. Bob was also an active and dedicated member of the Olivet Lutheran Church from the early 1960s until 2008. He was a dedicated Franklin Park Mall walker during his retirement. He and Betty traveled to Europe several times, bringing home many photographs of their tours. In 2008, due to health problems Bob and Betty resided at Wolf Creek Village, Toledo, Ohio then moved to another facility in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2011.
Bob was preceded in death by his only sibling, Ann Paull. He is survived by his wife Betty, their sons, Thomas and Richard, daughters-in-law Nancy Shryock and Sharon Johnson, four grandchildren, Carolyn, Emily, Anne Marie (Lindsey) Brown, and Natalie, as well great-granddaughter Elaina Marie.

Robert’s cremains will be interred in the Garden of Peace at Olivet Lutheran Church in Sylvania, Ohio. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time.
