William (Bill) Zaring, 96, of Carmel, passed away on April 16, 2020.
Bill was born on June13, 1923 in Indianapolis to William and Gertrude Zaring. He attended School #76, Shortridge High School, Indiana University, and Travelers Insurance Co. Home Office School. In 1945 he started an independent insurance agency that he later sold to Gregory & Appel in 1959.
In 1962, He started Zaring Industries, an electronics company, making parts and systems for the United States Navy, Delco Electronics, Cummins, and Arvin Industries. In 1975 Bill was named Small Businessman of the Year.
In 1975, Bill and his wife, Patricia, closed the business and turned to their hobby of breeding and training thoroughbred horses that were raced in Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Louisiana, and Indiana. The husband and wife team also enjoyed buying, renovating, and selling commercial real estate, sailing, horseback riding, and camping throughout the United States.
Bill was involved with many organizations including Indiana University, Beta Theta Pi of which he was President during 1947, Skull & Crescent and Inter-Fraternity Counsel, Thoroughbred Club of America, Keeneland Club of Kentucky, and was an active member of Carmel United Methodist Church.
William is survived by his wife, Patricia; sister, Dorathy Zaring Jones; son, William (Barbara) Zaring; daughters, Gaye Mueller and Catherine (Chuck) Boll; grandchildren, Jeff (Katie) Mueller, Chris (Erin) Zaring, Carey (Michael) Fisher, Casey (Ben) Clark; as well as 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Bill’s family would like to thank Guardian Angel Hospice and the staff at Carmel Health and Living Community for their loving care and support throughout his time in their care.
A celebration of life for William will be held at a later date. In leu of flowers, the family is asking for memorial donations to be made in Bill’s name to the Carmel Methodist Church or the Hamilton County Humane Society.
