William “Bill” Lee Mynatt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on February 28, 2023. Born in Hazelwood, IN on October 10, 1946, to Sylvan and Leila Mynatt, Bill graduated from Clayton High School in 1964. He was married to SunHui “Ann” Mynatt for 56 years, and the couple made their home in Indianapolis, IN and together had four children.
Bill enjoyed a successful career in the United States Army, serving tours in South Korea and Vietnam. In 1968, his patrol was responsible for uncovering the first cache of North Korean soldiers and equipment that had been stored to infiltrate the DMZ since the end of the Korean War, awarding Bill with a battlefield commission. After his completion of Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, GA, he asked for an assignment to South Korea, to return to marry, Ann. He was then deployed to Vietnam and became the recipient of the bronze star medal for his actions on September 2, 1969 when he “rushed 75 meters across open terrain to the side of his fallen comrade . . . ignoring the enemy rounds impacting all around him” to administer medical aid and carry back his comrade, “through enemy barrage to a secure position. . . saving the life of a fellow soldier.” After 25 years of service, Bill retired as a Lt. Col. in 1991 when he then began his career as a contract's specialist with the U.S. Customs Service and Border Patrol. He retired in 2009, traveling to family and military reunions and spending as much time as possible cheering on his grandchildren in sporting events and school activities.
Surviving Bill is his wife, Ann and his four children SunHui Pauley (Larry), William “Billy” Mynatt, Jr. (Jenn), Candie M. Dibble (Bryce) and George “Buddy” Mynatt (Bao).
