William Lewis “Bill” Abbott, 79, of Indianapolis, IN passed way peacefully on Tuesday, January 22, 2025. He was born to Lois Startzman Abbott and William Abbott in Elwood, IN on October 27, 1946.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Lillian “Lillie” Abbott; and three children, Ryan C. Abbott, Thomas R. Wininger, and Liza M. (Wininger) Grosvenor. He was a grandfather of, Jacob, Karley, Nathan, Carlos, and Luzy. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and Vietnam Veteran who proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.
Bill became a Freemason and member of the Oakland Masonic Lodge #140 F.&A.M. Oaklandon, IN, and was installed as Worshipful Master in 1974.
Bill became a Journeyman Ironworker in 1977, of Local #22, Indianapolis, IN for 36 years. He loved his job and was proud to say he contributed and topped out many of the high-rise buildings in downtown Indy, including Market Square Arena, Bank One and American United Life. He loved walking the high beams that overlooked his city knowing he was part of the construction.
One of his favorite jobs was co-owner of A&W Blacksmith shop in historic Lockerbie Square making specialty hand crafted items ranging from candle holders to spiral staircases from hand forged iron.
One of Bill’s favorite pastimes was fishing. Not only did he fish most of Indiana’s lakes, but many across the country as a tournament fisherman. He included his family and spent many beautiful days and nights coming to these events.
He loved his Harley and always looked forward to riding with his kids, Ryan and Tom, and other friends. He also showed his love of NASCAR Racing with his grandson, Jake, and attended many tracks around the country.
As his grandchildren and children will tell you, he always pushed for higher education. He attended Purdue University and many types of classes afterward.
Bill was a staunch supporter of Tom, Liza, Ryan, Jake, and Karley’s sporting events, often traveling out of town to watch them play.
Bill will be dearly missed by family and friends alike. May he fly home and Rest in Peace.
