Thomas Mark “Mark” Sexton, 69, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Sunday August 25, 2024 after a two-year battle with cancer.
Mark was born on June 13, 1955 in Franklin, Indiana to Ed and Zelma Sexton and raised on the west side of Indianapolis. Growing up he was incredibly athletic and great at any sport he played, particularly golf. Despite being right handed, he had a left-hand swing in both golf and baseball.
Mark was also a dreamer and an avid lover of nature, animals, design, architecture, art and music. He spent much of his life as a Landscape Architect, with a hand in planning and designing parks, greenways, and public spaces across the Midwest.
Mark was infinitely curious and loved to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds. He was a wealth of knowledge on many subjects and someone you wanted on your trivia team. He approached everyone he met with warmth and friendliness and prided himself on being a "good patient" for his caregivers, even on his hardest days. Mark also had a wacky sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. Once you could get him going, he had an contagious laugh and an unbridled optimism.
Mark had a knack and kinship with the natural world. Animals would flock to him, and he knew the name of nearly every native plant and tree species of the region. His two daughters, Anna and Sara, spent their childhoods hiking, visiting prairielands, and wading in creeks to catch frogs and tadpoles with him. He loved to spend time at the cabin with his beloved brother and best friend, Bob, fishing and watching the hummingbirds. His awe at the splendor of life and the beauty of nature were instilled and live on within all of them.
He died with his two girls, whom he was infinitely proud of, by his side.
Mark is survived by and will be forever missed by his two daughters, Anna (Tyler Boeing) Sexton and Sara Sexton, brother Dr. Robert Sexton, and sister Kaye (Darrell) Miller. He was preceded in passing by his parents
A visitation will be held on Friday August 30th from 11am - 1pm at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis, IN. A private graveside service will follow that day at 3pm at West Ridge Park Cemetery.
