Thelma Bernice Walker, 76, was born to William Edward Walker and Lenora (Williams) Walker on November 24, 1948, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Thelma was raised in Indianapolis and was the fifth of nine siblings. She completed her high school diploma at Shortridge High School in 1966. She later received her associate’s degree in allied health as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from Indiana University in 1979.
After completing her associate’s degree, she worked at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Indianapolis as a ward secretary, for over 10 years.
After leaving the VA hospital, Thelma worked as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) for over 30 years. Thelma was devoted to helping others and was a traveling COTA throughout Indiana and the tri-state area, assisting the disabled and aging population in assisted living, nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
Thelma shared a child with Thomas Wilson and gave birth to her son, Stephan Deon Wilson, on January 26, 1969.
Thelma was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who had many joys in life. She was baptized as a member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal church. She was a member for over 10 years and served in the Missionary Society.
Thelma enjoyed many hobbies and activities. She enjoyed traveling both domestically and internationally. She had an artistic and creative flair for all mediums of art. From clothing and makeup to interior design and fine art, she loved making things beautiful. Thelma will also be remembered for her love of music, particularly 80s and 90s R&B.
She loved reading and researching historical facts and events. She had a passionate interest in black history, particularly the Buffalo Soldiers. She also enjoyed watching movies, her favorite genres were classic and science fiction. She liked dancing and telling jokes and being the life of the party.
She transitioned to her eternal home on November 27, 2024.
She is preceded in death by her son, Stephan Wilson; parents, William Edward Walker and Lenora Walker; two sisters, Jeanette Walker Parker and Pauline Walker; and one brother, William E. Walker, Jr.
Thelma leaves behind to cherish her memory her sisters, Rochelle Walker, Joan Walker, and Sarah Walker; two brothers, Carl Walker and Nathaniel Walker; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends and family are welcome to gather in celebration of Thelma’s life on Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 10:00am – 12:00pm at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250. Memorial services to be held at 11:00am at the funeral home.
