Thelma J. Brown

March 3, 1960 — May 24, 2020

On Sunday, 24 May, 2020, Thelma J. Brown (née Back), loving wife, caring mother of two children, and adoring grandmother to five grandchildren, passed away at the tender age of 60 due to natural complications.

Thelma, insistently referred to as TeeJay, was born on 3 March, 1960 in Hazard, KY to Jesse and Ora Back. Forged in the hills of Kentucky, she left schooling at a young age to care for her parents and family. In the late 1970’s, she traveled to Indiana to start a new chapter in her life with her sister Dovie. On November 11th, 1978, after a brief courtship, she married Arie W. Brown. Together, they raised a daughter, Tracy, and a son, Jessup, in the heart of Indiana.

Apart from endearing wife and passionate mother of two, Thelma took on a variety of jobs throughout her life to support her family, often times holding multiple positions at once. She worked as a laboratory technician and as a homeroom mother to retail salesperson and as a parts molder. Never one to give up, she always strived to provide the best for her children.

Thelma was an avid collector of all things bears from jewelry to stuffed animals to figurines. She enjoyed watching action movies and investigative television. She loved seeing her grandchildren play and talking about her fur babies. She was at home in the kitchen, where her delicious recipes and famous dishes were frequently requested. She was proud to be an American and was known to deck out her vehicle with American flags and magnets. Thelma was most known for her enduring strength, unwavering commitment, infectious personality, and unbridled sass.

Thelma was preceded in death by her mother, Ora, her father, Jesse, her sisters, Dovie and Irene, and her child, Jamie. She is survived by her husband Arie, her children, Tracy and Jessup, her brothers, Cecil and Herman, her sisters, Violet and Joyce, her grandchildren, Alexxis, Katelynn, Emmalee, Isaiah, and Gavin, her fur babies, Buttercup Rose, Dakota Blue, and Rosie, as well as, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A closed Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, 5 June, 2020 at the Harry W. Moore Chapel in Indianapolis, IN at 2 p.m. Donations may be sent to a charity of your choice.
