Sylvester J. Hill

September 20, 1939 — May 15, 2020

Sylvester (Sy) Jerome Hill, age 80, of New Palestine, IN, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020.
Sy was born on September 20, 1939, in Falmouth, IN. to his parents, Edgar Bernard Hill, and Hilda Elizabeth (Humig) Hill. Sy has a sister, Patricia (Patsy) Ann Hill Page (James Keith Page, deceased), and two brothers, Gail Eugene Hill, Leo Joseph Hill. Both of Sy’s parents and both of his brothers preceded Sy in death.
Sy went to work at Eli Lilly shortly after graduation from high school as a key punch operator. His hard work paid off from educational opportunities afforded him at Eli Lilly, and coupled with his love for computers allowed Sy to retire as a Senior Computer Systems Specialist.
Sy loved every aspect of his family and his life, and he centered his focus on his family by doing things to put smiles on the faces of those he loved, down to figuring out how to grow huge perfect tomatoes that were used in foods prepared by Louise for the family gatherings. He loved spending time with his dog and his best friend, Sam, who was always at his side. Sy enjoyed watching various sports on television, debating politics, and figuring things out, or as he would say, “noodling“. It really didn’t matter what he did or what he talked about, it was always his family that he was focused on and conversation always returned to that subject.
Sy married the love of his life, Helen Louise, on November 5, 1983, and was preceded by her in death. He has 2 children, John Hill, and Toni Owens from a previous marriage, and 6 stepchildren, Bruce Wesley Smith, (deceased), Mark Smith (Sara Smith), Tim Smith (Jennifer Smith), Scott Smith, Darrell Smith (Bonnie Smith), and Pamela Calaway. Sy has 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 11 nieces and nephews, and many friends.
