Suzanne "Susie" Dawes

Suzanne “Susie” Dawes, wasn’t quite ready to go, because she had so many more projects to finish, but on December 28, 2024, after a full life and many years of dialysis, she went very peacefully back to her maker. Susie was 89 years young.

Susie was born on July 7th, 1935, to Maurice and Eula May (Ross) Dawes in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, but she grew up in Evansville, Indiana. She attended Washington Elementary School before she graduated from Bosse High School in 1953. She then went to Indiana State Teacher’s College for two years, before continuing on to Indiana University, where she received her B.S. and Master’s degrees by 1971. Susie continued her love of education, serving as a kindergarten teacher for Monroe County Community School from 1968-1987. She later served a substitute teacher for Oldham County School Corp and Anchorage Schools from 1988-1993, and interim director for Trinity Presbyterian Preschool in 1994.

She married Charles “Corky” Thompson in 1955 and was the mother to 3 children; Terri, Maurice “Rees”, and Doug. She was a loving mother and teacher her entire life.

Among the many joys in her life, Susie loved working in her yard, creating crafts for friends and family, canning, playing bridge and spending time with family during the holidays.

She made many Christmas decorations, which can be found in all of her children’s homes. They are reminders of the great love and joy she brought to everything she crafted. Susie also loved watching sports and cheering on her favorite teams, the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana University, and the Pacers.

Susie is survived by two of her children, Rees (Diane) Thompson and Doug (Mary) Thompson; 4 grandchildren, Andy, Patrick, Taylor, and Austin; 1 great-grandchild, Tatum; sister, Deborah Dawes Van Zandt; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Corky; her daughter, Terri; daughter-in-law, Diane Thompson; and her brother, Richard Dawes.

Services for Susie will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Noblesville, 1207 Conner St, Noblesville, IN 46060 on February 8, 2025, at 12pm. Visitation to be held from 11am until the time of service at the church. Family and friends are welcome to gather for a meal in Susie’s memory, following the services at the church.
