Subhra Chatterjee was born to Shankari and Durga Das Mukherjee in the city of Calcutta (Kolkata), India, on 31st October 1951 a Halloween baby, which was also her favorite celebration amongst all festivities. Born into affluence she grew up with a thirst for knowledge and curiosity, always wanting to learn new things. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Bengali Literature from Calcutta University and never lost her interest in classical literature which was evident from her reciting verbose and complicated prose and poetry like it was a nursery rhyme. All those who met Subhra walked away amazed by her depth of knowledge, sharp intellect, sharp humor, and a brilliant mind; while everyone remembers her for a beaming radiant smile that was infectious and would light up any room.
As she enrolled to pursue her Master's program luck intervened, and she married Ranjit Kumar Chatterjee and went onto raise two sons and become a full time homemaker in the small industrial town of Asansol. She was also extremely close to her siblings, sisters Kalpin, Alpin and Tamol (her brother) and maintained strong relationships of a matriarch despite moving to the US in the later part of her life. She was a devout person with firm beliefs and worshipped his Holiness Sri Sri Mohananda Brahmachari seeking the best of life for her loved ones. She loved to cook and was always found creating recipes after binge watching YouTube channels, there was never a dearth of delicious delicacies at home when she was around. She loved visiting places, taking millions of pictures that would make terabyte storage look like kilobyte in a second, and going for a ride in her son’s Dodge Charger listening to the roar of the HEMI.
Subhra adored her grandkids (Utsav and Abir) and fondly called them by many nicknames, her daughters-in-law Allison and Debasmita and her sons Anindo and Amlan were her entire world. She also loved spending time with her beloved cats, Fonzie, Ginger, Hulk, Impy, Jango, and Kraken, as some fought her for paper towels while some decided to take her spot on the bed relegating her to the edge.
After a long arduous battle with breast cancer, Subhra lost her battle while getting the opportunity to have her beloved family close prior passing on 19th December 2024.
She is preceded in death by both her parents, her brother (Rajat/Tamol) and her husband (Ranjit) and her beloved cats Fonzie and Ginger. Subhra will be fondly remembered by her sons (daughters-in-law), Anindo (Allison) and Amlan (Debasmita) and grandkids (Utsav and Abir to Amlan/Debasmita), her sisters Kalpana Mukherjee (Kalpin) and Alpana Chatterjee (Alpin), her daughters' in-laws’ parents Murari Mohan and Santana Banerjee (Debasmita), Leo and Nikki Ford (Allison) and a host of extended family members and loved ones.
