Steven Thomas Jacobs, 54, of Indianapolis, died February 9, 2021 after a brief but intense battle with lymphoma. Although Steve openly characterized this disease as “B.S” to family, his hospice nurses were impressed by his politeness and congeniality. He was born in Champaign Urbana, IL on September 8, 1966 to Phyllis (Youtz) and Thomas M Jacobs. Steve graduated from Carmel High School in 1985 and received a BA from Indiana University. In 2012 he convinced Suzanne that two nerds belong together, and they spent many happy evenings reading about genomics and Panzer tank construction. Believing that this combination of weirdness could only generate great things, they welcomed their daughter, Catherine, in 2013. Steve worked for the Marion County Department of Health Epidemiology, did advance training in Radiation Detection, and worked with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Bomb Squad to protect the public during events such as the Indianapolis 500 and Colts games.
Steve loved history, especially military history. At holiday gatherings all it took was someone to ask a question about history and he was off…. He was so knowledgeable about Civil War battlefields that he drove off the interstate to go find the site of a Calvary battle in Kentucky. He enjoyed target shooting, science fiction, good bread, fine scotch, German Beer, and not the least, learning. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could keep a straight face while he told a joke. After 8 years of marriage his wife still looked at him suspiciously sometimes when he told stories. He loved to take the family on trips and truly enjoyed the driving, but the biggest joy of his life was his family. He is survived by his Mother, Phyllis Jacobs, and father, Thomas (Shirley) Jacobs; wife, Suzanne (Stewart) Jacobs and his youngest daughter, Catherine (at home). He is also survived by his son, Joshua S. Lagle who is serving in the Army; daughter, Sarah Gordon of Huntsville, Alabama, grandsons, Braden and Brody Gordon; sister, Tammy (Jim) Dixon, niece Allie Dixon, nephews Cameron and Brendon Dixon.
