RUTH ELLEN DRAUGHON ROBERTS, fondly referred to as “Baby Ruth” was the youngest of six children. Ruth was born on November 28, 1932, in Springfield, Tennessee, Robertson County. Her beloved parents were Bedford and Louvenia Draughon. Ruth attended Bradford High School in Springfield. The family later moved to Indianapolis where she completed her education at Crispus Attucks High School.
Ruth was united in marriage to Earl William Roberts in 1948. Five children were born to this union: Steven, Stephanie, Stanley, Earl, and Sheldon Roberts.
Ruth professed a hope in Christ and was united in faith at Saint Bridget Catholic Church where she was a faithful member. Ruth worked various jobs in Indianapolis and started her career with P.R. Mallory and retired from the United Postal Service after 37 years of service.
Ruth was a very kind person and very well-liked. She was a hard and dedicated worker who took pride in whatever she set out to accomplish. Ruth was loved and adored by all who knew her, especially by her children and grandchildren. Her favorite past time was watching CNN News and enthusiastically discussing the latest political news, her knowledge was endless. Her nights were spent each evening watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Ruth loved to travel with her good friend Vern Esther, whether it was on a luxury cruise, cross-country bus tours and business travel. Grass did not grow under Ruth’s feet.
Ruth departed this life on October 23, 2024, at her home, at the age of 91, she was approaching her 92nd birthday in one month and four days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl W. Roberts; son, Steven Roberts; 2 grandsons, Kenneth Tucker and Brandon Roberts; 4 sisters, Mary Henry, Rowena Whitfield, Dorothy Hooper, Helena Sweatman; 1 brother, Raymond Draughon.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Stephanie Roberts and son’s Stanley (Barbara) Roberts, Earl Roberts, Sheldon (Pat) Roberts; 4 grandchildren, William (Natalie) Gordon; Kandis Roberts, Justin Roberts, Shauntel (Darius) Brooks, Ashley (Jordan) Walter and several great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Services for Ruth will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 1:00pm at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN, 46250. Friends and family are welcome to gather for a public visitation from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.
