Robert Orlin “Bert” Aspy Sr., age 94, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2023, following a brief illness. Bert was a kind soul and a true example of the “Greatest Generation”. He will be profoundly missed by his family and friends.

Bert Aspy was born in Fort Wayne, Ind. on January 12, 1928, to Virgil and Mary Aspy. He graduated from Central High School and then proudly served his country in the US Army’s Sixth Division, 706th Ordnance Company. He was stationed in Korea as part of peacekeeping deployment at the close of World War II. Bert returned from his military duties in 1947 and attended Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne where he played basketball for the intramural champions and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He was married to the love of his life, Genevieve (née Manecke) in 1952. Bert and Genny were an inseparable couple and raised three children in their home in Fort Wayne, where they enjoyed their many years of marriage together. Bert was a mechanical engineer at the Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire Company where he earned a patent and retired in 1987. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling the world and hobbies of bowling, golfing, fishing, playing cards, and shooting hoops well into his later years. Most of all, he found joy in life by spending time with his family and sharing stories and laughs. He spent his final years at Woodland Terrace, a retirement community, in New Palestine, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Genevieve (Genny), his parents, and his sister Barbara Couture.

He is survived by his children: Robert (Barbara) Aspy, Jr. of Bloomington, Ind.; Michael (Jennifer) Aspy, of Carmel, Ind.; and Dr. Sandra Aspy of Greenfield, Ind.; grandchildren: Zed (Courtney) Hott, Nash (Hannah) Hott, and Madeline (Paul) Schiffman; and three great-grandchildren.

A private internment ceremony at Eel River Cemetery will be held for the immediate family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations are requested to be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
