Richard Lynn Anderson, a beloved husband, father, Papaw, brother, and friend, known for his larger-than-life personality and infectious spirit, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 77 on November 1, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on February 18,1947, in Frankfort, Indiana, to Mildred and William Anderson, Richard was the fourth of six children. Eventually moving to the near east side of Indianapolis, Richard attended Howe High School. Friends from his North Irvington neighborhood still share legendary stories of “Dicky Dart.”
Richard was an incredibly hard worker from a young age. He often told stories of his time at Emge Packing Company and Budweiser. Working at Pepsi Cola Bottling Company for 20 years, Richard had a very successful career winning several awards for merchandising and sales. His work with local high schools through Pepsi, and his generosity, led to him fondly being known as, “the Pepsi man". After retiring from Pepsi, his entrepreneurial spirit led to the creation of Susie's Candy Land Vending which he ran from his garage. When he was not working, Richard's garage became a gathering place for family and friends. Stories were shared and laughter echoed there. His towering presence, at 6 feet 7 inches tall, was matched only by his hospitality and wit. He always said “if the door is open, come on in for a visit!"
In his free time, Richard had a deep love of turkey and deer hunting and fishing (especially Lake Sinclair, Michigan) with his close friends. You could often hear Richard practicing his turkey calls in the garage or seriously working on fishing gear. He was a devoted fan of Indiana University basketball and Notre Dame football, but Roncalli volleyball was his all-time favorite. He enjoyed woodworking, reloading ammo, and collecting antique lighters and gumball machines. He also adored his little, white West Highland terriers, Sassy Rose and Tilley. He even made friends with Frank the cat in his last few weeks.
Richard's family was the center of his world. He is survived by his loving wife, Susie Anderson, and his cherished children: Carissa (Matthew) Maddox and Lucas (Becky) Epperson. He was a proud grandfather to Dakota (23), Miriam (23), Anna (22), Ryan (20), Sadie (16), and Lainey (14).He is also survived by two younger siblings, a brother, Andy (Donna) Anderson in Mims, Florida and a sister, Susan (Brian) Sartain in Kingsland, Georgia.
Richard’s friends and their children were always considered family. He was affectionately known as "Pops" to some and "Uncle Rich" to others, all a testament to his deep commitment and love. He will be deeply missed, and his legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Richard will be held on Monday, November 11th, at 3:00 PM at Indiana Funeral Care, 2433 East Main Street, Greenwood, Indiana 46143. Visitation hours will be from 1:00-3:00 PM prior to the service.
