The Reverend Jerry Sanders Curry (76), of Indianapolis, died unexpectedly at Methodist Hospital on April 1, 2020.
Jerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Sara, daughter Catherine & son-in-law Phil Anderson of Louisville, Ky.; and his son Joshua Curry also of Louisville. Jerry loved Catherine & Josh deeply, respected them sincerely and considered himself privileged to be their dad.
Jerry’s large loving family also includes stepdaughters Michaela Nolan (Eamon), Genevieve Miller, Mara Hoberty and family, all of Indianapolis; stepson Brock Jolly and family of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren Hannah and David Curry, Summer and Lauren Anderson, and Cora Nolan. Also surviving is Jerry’s beloved brother, Jim Curry and his wife Dee of New Albany, Ind. He will be fondly remembered by family as well as wonderful friends Jerry deeply loved.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Bernard L. and Vivian Sanders Curry, brother Jack Curry, sister Jeanne Curry Lamm, and wife Alice O’Bierne Curry.
Jerry was raised in Indianapolis and New Albany. He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn., in 1962, and then studied at Indiana University. While at IU, Jerry was initiated into the Chi Phi National Fraternity, proving himself to be a fun-loving rogue and lifelong friend to a cohort of very special brothers.
He finished his education at the University of Louisville, graduating in 1967.
Upon graduation Jerry joined his family business, B.L. Curry and Sons Veneer Mill in New Albany as a manager, buyer and co-owner for 20+ years. Upon retirement from the mill, Jerry accepted a call from his Lord and attended the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He served as an assisting pastor at First Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ind., then as pastor at St. George Lutheran Church in Edinburgh, Ind.
With faith and honor Jerry lovingly pastored the St. George family, whom he frequently referred to as his “dear ones” for 10 years before retiring from his ministry in 2013.
Over the years, Jerry comforted the sick and their families while serving as chaplain at Methodist Hospital, Riley Hospital and IU Saxony Hospital.
Jerry was honored to serve at Camp Atterbury in Edinburg as chaplain in the Indiana Guard Reserve. He assisted in the massive deployment and redeployment of active duty Army troops, while counseling and praying with fellow troops. Jerry rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel during his 10 year volunteer career. This opportunity to serve and wear the uniform of a United States Army soldier was a source of great pride and humility for Jerry. He loved the men and women of the 4th Brigade and the entire Indiana Guard Reserve.
After retiring from ministry Jerry and Sara moved from Columbus to the Indianapolis area. There they worshiped at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church in Fishers. After moving to the west side of town they joined Faith Lutheran Church in Avon. Gratitude
is expressed to the Faith community for the love, prayers and support they gave both Jerry and Sara during Jerry’s illness and as they continue to support Sara and her family.
The Curry family is extremely grateful to the IU Health medical teams who diligently cared for Jerry, especially Dr. Mellissa Knutson, Dr. Omar Batal, and Dr. Greg Sachs.
Dr. Sachs and his team at the Eskanazi Health Center for Brain Care guided Jerry & Sara with professionalism and compassion, while helping them to understand and navigate Jerry’s Alzheimer’s disease enabling Jerry to live with faith, humor and dignity.
Thanks also to Maria Holmes and staff at the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter and to Madison Henderson and the wonderful, caring nursing staff of the memory care unit at the Villages of Avon Health.
Due to the current COVID restrictions, a service in celebration of Jerry’s life will be planned at a later date, when gatherings are allowed.
