Rebecca Sue Hughes

January 16, 1954 — October 7, 2023

Elwood

Rebecca Sue Hughes, aged 69, lovingly known as Becky, left us to be with God and her beloved Mother, Barbara J. Hughes, on Saturday, October 7, 2023. She, a cherished daughter, sister, auntie, and friend, will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

Becky was born on January 16, 1954, in Anderson, Indiana to her Mother Barbara and her Father Walter Donald Hughes. She spent her formative years in Elwood, Indiana with her three sisters Rachel, Rita, and Ruth. Upon graduating from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1972, she went to Florida to care for her aging Grandmother Myrtle Doan and Aunt Nell Hosier. While in Florida Becky completed a two-year business degree in 1979 and later received her nursing license from Polk Community College.

Becky was a wonderful nurse. Greatly loved by all for whom she cared. She was kind and her ability to find humor in nearly any moment—both appropriate and inappropriate—made her a crowd favorite. Her humor was a gift that made room for her humanity and the humanity of others. The only thing bigger than Becky’s jokes was her laughter; to which she often refrained “I think I made a tinkle” after cackling to one of her own precarious “funnies” as she called them.

Becky was a devoted daughter and auntie. She loved her mommy more than anyone and anything in the world and would do nearly anything for her. When her nieces and nephews were little, you could find her with a gaggle of children and her mother at the pool, out to eat, at a movie, or having a slumber party.

Becky was a fighter. She battled cancer for nearly 20 years. In her final days she was surrounded by her sisters and her dear friend Sandra Barron. They held her with immense love as she made her journey home.

Rebecca Sue Hughes is survived by her sisters and their spouses, Rachel Lynn Walker and Blake Aaron Walker, Rita K. Hughes, and Harriet Ruth Landrum and Troy Tyrone Landrum; her nieces and nephews Jonathan Wayne Dixon, Joshua Alan Hughes, Ruth Alvarez, Christine Nicole Chowherd, Brittney Johnson, Marketa Cartwright, Nikkita Rachel Oliver, Jessica Renee Jimenez, Luciano Jimenez, Latory Landrum, and Troy Landrum, Jr.; her grandnieces and grandnephews Jonathon Wayne Dixon, Jr., Francisco Andres Dixon, Ruthie Bates, Sydney Taylor Hughes, Francesca Jimenez, Luciano Jimenez, Roselyn Jimenez, Jayden Williams, Deondre Williams, Elijah Williams, Bryson Soann, and Mia Gonzales; and her most cherished and best friend Sandra Barron.

Rebecca goes to be with her grandparents Wayne and Myrtle Doan (maternal) and Charlie and Hazel Hughes (paternal), her mother Barbara J. Hughes, her father Walter Donald Hughes, her Aunt Nell Hosier, and her nephew Aaron Darnell Jones.

Becky may be gone from our sight, but she is never gone from our hearts. She has touched our lives, and her memory will be with us until we are once again reunited together in God’s glory.
