Raymond John Marquette Jr., 89, entered God’s kingdom on December 21, 2023. He was born in Scranton, PA on October 8, 1934, to Dorthy and Raymond John Marquette. Ray is survived by his wife, Therese Chatelaine; his son, Raymond John Marquette III; two daughters: Renée Ruth Marquette and Laurie Christena Tabacheck; Laurie’s husband Dennis Tabacheck; three grandchildren: Alex, Lachlan, and Ainsley; stepson Anthony Joseph Ragucci; and two step-granddaughters: Catherine and Sophie. Ray is also survived by his loving brother, Donald Richard Marquette and sister-in-law, Esther Marquette. Ray is proceeded in death by his brother Paul Arthur Marquette.
Instead of attending a traditional high school, Ray graduated from The Johnson School for Carpentry, Cabinet Making and Architectural Drawing in 1953, which lead to his service as an Engineer Foreman in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany during the Korean War. After serving his country, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Geneva College in 1960, Master of Sacred Theology degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1965, and a Doctor of Ministry from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond Virginia, in 1976.
Ray was a Presbyterian Pastor of several congregations in Pennsylvania. He moved to Indiana in the mid-1970’s, where he was the Associate Executive Presbyter of Whitewater Valley Presbytery. Ray’s work focused on healing divisions in the community, mediating discussions over contentious issues to find common ground and fostering human connections. He retired in 2000.
Ray and his wife Therese loved to travel. They visited France, Scottland, Egypt, Canada, and traveled extensively through the United States. They spent many of their retirement vacations in Fort Myers, FL.
Ray’s contagious enthusiasm and joy for life were reflected in the beautiful things he created. He was an accomplished artist, woodworker, printmaker, photographer, penmaker and cook, receiving many awards and much recognition for these talents.
A calling at 9:00 a.m. and funeral service at 10:00 a.m. will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN on Friday, December 29, 2023. Flowers may be sent to the church via the Indiana Funeral Care website.
