Raymond Earl Lawhorn Sr.

Raymond Lawhorn, Sr. (83), of McCordsville, Indiana, beloved father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, Indiana, surrounded by family. 

Raymond was born on June 28, 1941, in Blakely, West Virginia to Effie Ruth (Judd) and Earl Elbert Lawhorn. He was the eldest child of 13.

Raymond graduated from Cedar Grove High School (Cedar Grove, West Virginia) in 1961. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he attended finance school at Fort Benjamin Harrison (Indianapolis, Indiana). Raymond served as a budget analyst, and he was stationed at various locations in Europe. After serving in the United States Army, Raymond continued his military service by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served as a budget officer in the U.S., Europe, Greenland, and Southeast Asia. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1977. In 1975, prior to retiring from the military, Raymond started his career as a National Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans in Chicago, Illinois. He retired from the Disabled American Veterans in 1996.

On September 24, 1966, Raymond married Yvonne “Bonnie” (Sullivan) of Elkhart, Indiana.

He is survived by his son, Raymond (Olesya) Lawhorn of McCordsville, Indiana; granddaughter, Juleah Lawhorn; three brothers, James Lawhorn, John Lawhorn, and George (Tamara) Lawhorn; and three sisters, Loretta (Doug) Gibson, Vierra (Randy) Gibson, and Vanessa (Greg) Green.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonne; his parents, Effie Ruth (Judd) and Earl Elbert; four sisters, Dreama Lawhorn, Arleen Lawhorn, Delores Estes, Carol Brown, and Alma Rogers; and one brother, Stephen Lawhorn.

Raymond enjoyed spending his time gardening, doing small home improvement projects, and reading. Most of all, spoiling his granddaughter, Juleah.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at McCordsville United Methodist Church (McCordsville, Indiana), followed by services at 2:00 PM. Reverend Daniel Payton will be officiating. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December, 11, 2024, at the Chapel of Memories (Rice Cemetery) in Elkhart, Indiana.

 Memorial contributions may be given to the American Stroke Association, Disabled American Veterans, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
