Penny Jo Buchanan, 60, of Elwood, Indiana, passed away on March 25, 2024, at Community Heart and Vascular in Indianapolis, IN. She was born on February 26, 1964, in Beech Grove, IN, to the late Homer Buchanan and Jacqueline (Newman) Buchanan. Penny grew up in the Indianapolis area before later moving to Tipton, IN. After receiving her high school diploma from Emmerich Manual High School, she went on to work a variety of jobs, often working two full-time jobs at a time. She was a hard worker with a passion for taking care of others, and her favorite position was being able to assist in nursing homes as a dietary manager, caring for residents and others in need.
On November 26, 1983, she married the father of her children, Glenn Long, and started a family together. Penny was a loving mother, gam, sister, aunt, and friend to many, who found many joys in life. She was an avid reader, who loved gardening and tending to her plants, thrifting, cooking, canning, and hitting the dance floor whenever she could. She also enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs play football. Her greatest joy in life, however, was the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, who will all miss her very much.
Penny is survived by her daughter, Natasha (Ronnie Watson) Long of Tipton, IN; her son, John (Meghan Reed) Long of Arcadia, IN; daughter, Emily Hampton; grandchildren, Landon Bachman, Mackenzie Reed, Robert Songer III, Madilynn Long, and Karly Hogue; sister, Sherry (Don) Spillane; brother, Randy Buchanan; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; as well as long time friend, Roger Brown. She is also survived by her bonus grandchildren, Tre Green, Layla Green, Christella Green, and Gianna Green; as well as all of her grandchildren’s friends, who all knew her as “Gam” as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Buchanan and Jacqueline Buchanan; son, Rocky Long; brother, Greg Buchanan; two sisters, Rosie Ramer and Donna Curtis; as well as the father of her children, Glenn Long.
Family and friends are welcome to gather for a celebration of Penny’s life to be held at 3:00pm, on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Solid Rock Church, 529 S. A St., Elwood, IN, 46036.
