Nellie Perry was born on April 3, 1930 in Hollandale, Mississippi and later was blessed to her loving adopted parents, Sim and Savannah Perry in Gary, Indiana.
She graduated from Gary Roosevelt High, later furthering her education in clerical studies, where she enrolled in a keypunch operator courses while working part-time at a restaurant. She soon after was employed by Inland Steel Corporation in East Chicago, Indiana. She retired after 28 years of service. Upon moving to Indianapolis she got a brief, part-time job at St. Vincent's Women Hospital.
Nellie was an active member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ in East Chicago, Indiana for many years before she joined her present church, Freedom Temple Church of God in Christ. Nellie was an active, devoted member, serving on various women's auxiliaries. She was a Mother of the Church and part of the Y.W.C.C.'s, C.W.C.'s, Prayer & Bible Band President and on the Mother's Board. Nellie would often go to the prison's for outreach ministries. She was always willing to serve the Lord!!!!
Nellie loved her family dearly and enjoyed the family gatherings, especially during the holidays. Her eyes would light up and gleam with everyone she had seen. She would look forward to her yearly vacations with her family and friends. Nellie loved to travel. We will have so many fond memories to treasure. She would look forward to her family reunions and her class reunions with Gary Roosevelt High School.
Nellie was preceded in death by her adopted, loving parents Sim & Savannah Perry; husband, Sylvester Smith Sr., 2 sons Alan M. Smith & David P. Smith; 3 brothers; Sylvester, William and Leroy; 2 sisters; Luethel, and Elizabeth, and both biological parents, Jimmie Pelmore.
Nellie Scott, of Indianapolis, transitioned at the Golden Age of 90 on December 2, 2020 in the comfort of her home with her loving family at her bedside. She was diagnosed with having cancer early February of this year.
She leaves to cherish her memories: 2 daughters, Carol Storey and Janet (James) Hester; 2 sons, Michael Smith and Sylvester (Tina) Smith; 1 brother, M.D.; 1 sister, Molly; 17 Grandchildren; 18 Great-Grandchildren; and 9 Great-Great Grandchildren and A HOST OF OTHER RELATIVES. LOL (Yes, she did get to vote)
