Pastor Melvin LaVerne McSwine I, Son of Sammie D. McSwine II & Ida Mae Frazier McSwine, was born April 25, 1957 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nick named “ Mickey” He began his life in Christ at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
He attended Elder W. Diggs School 42 Melvin loved to play basketball and joined the 42 Jets basketball team. He attended George Washington High School and graduated in 1975 where he played for the Washington Continentals basketball team.
Melvin Honorably served in the U.S. Air Force where he became a Law Enforcement Specialist and for the Air Force Falcons basketball team. He attended I.U.P.U.I. where his major was Business Administration & Speech.
Melvin’ studies also geared him to become an electrician while working at Barth Electric Company. He began his journey to become a jack of all trades as a talented carpenter and electrician, business administration, and drafting. Melvin worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Melvin married the love of his life, LaTanya Mann. In their union, they raised 3 sons: Michael Cortez, Desmond Emery and Melvin LaVerne II.
Melvin worked in the U.S. Army Finance & Accounting Center where he worked as an Accounts Maintenance Clerk. Melvin worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as a Quality Work Life Coordinator after 16 years. Melvin received his appointed calling to preach in the late 80’s, Shortly thereafter he became an Associate Pastor at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and taught the New Members Class. His ministry at Regency Place Nursing Home took off, followed by his Street Ministry, and Ministry in the Prison system. In December 1991, he founded Prayer and Ministry of the Word Church, Inc. He loved teaching, preaching and healing within the full gospel with bold and precise passion, he began his online ministry, Act 6-4.org, in 2020.
Melvin L. McSwine I, departed this life Sunday January 29, 2023 his favorite day of the week. He leaves to cherish his memory of his beloved & devoted wife of 42 years, LaTanya; sons, Michael Cortez (Sarajevo O.V. Anderson), Desmond Emery (Shelby Taylor); granddaughters, Jamyila Mykell, Mikkiya Nicole, Ayanna Emery, Keely Ann; grandsons, Michael Cortez ll, and Grayson Michael; one great granddaughter, Amyla Vaye; Brothers, George Brown Sr, Sammie D. “Lucky”, Lewis G “Rocky”, and Leviticus “Ricky” McSwine.
He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin LeVerne McSwine, II, his father Sammie D. McSwine, II, his mother Ida Mae McSwine, two grandsons, Mikel C. McSwine and Micol C. McSwine, two brothers, Andrew P. Brown and Marion C. Brown, and one sister, Eloise "Wgee" McSwine.
