Maurice (Maury) Oldham, 96, passed away peacefully Friday morning, October 21st, born May 23, 1926 in Rush County Indiana. The mother of his children, Charlotte (Sample) Oldham preceded him in 1983. He remarried Maxine (Maple) Gordon Oldham who preceded him in 2013.
Maurice is survived by a daughter, Christine (Greg) of Johns Creek, GA; 4 sons, David of Smithfield, VA, Marc (Carol) of Dallas, OR, Richard (Nancy) of Indianapolis and Doug of West Harrison, IN. As well as 4 stepchildren; Carolyn Keith, Kathy Newkirk, Phil (Michele) Gordon and Elbert (Diane) Gordon, all of Rush County IN. He had 25 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Maury was the godfather of musical instrument repair in Indianapolis. Nearly everyone who practices this craft learned from him or his proteges. Without him, the professional musicians of Indianapolis, as well as high school and middle school instrumentalists could not have flourished. He was a member of Edgewood United Methodist Church, the Southport Lions Club, Indiana Lions Band, Lions Camp Woodsmoke, Indianapolis Musicians Union, Band Director of Sacred Heart High School and the founder of Musicians’ Repair & Sales, which Rick and Nancy and his grandson Dan perpetuate today. He was a man that had a vision once he left the farm in Rush County to follow his musical dreams and his soon-to-be wife in Indianapolis where he fulfilled the American Dream. He will be missed by the many lives he touched.
Visitation will be at his church, Edgewood United Methodist at 1820 E. Epler Ave, Friday October 28 from 4-7 pm and Saturday from 10-12pm with a memorial service at noon. Donations are recommended in lieu of flowers to The Southport Lions Club, 332 N. Capitol Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
