Mattie L. Cohen

Mrs. Mattie L. Cohen, the daughter of Maggie Lyle and Jasper Herd was born and September 12, 1929 in Trinity Alabama.

Due to rough times her family endured, she went to work early in life in the cotton fields of Alabama, therefore an eighth-grade education was all that she could achieve.
The desire to finish school never left her and she graduated later in life with a high school Diploma from Arsenal Technical High School.
Mattie Married Charles H. Cohen on September 1, 1945 and was married 52 years. Four children were born from the union: Charles H. Cohen Jr, Toney E. Cohen, Susan E. Cohan and Teresa G. Cohen.

Mattie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young girl. She became an active, faithful member of Love Chapel in Trinity Alabama. She later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana with her husband and became a dedicated, faithful, and active member of True Vine Baptist Church where she thought Sunday School, sang in the choir, was an usher, church nurse and a secretary.

After the passing of her husband, she become a member of Calvary Temple where she served in the women ministries, helped feed and clothed the homeless, and was a greeter for the church until the church split and moved to a different location. She then became a member of Mount Carmel Church and was there ever since.

Mattie had a love for encouraging and helping people. She became a nurse at community hospital where she retired after many years of service. She was also a member of the Senior Sophisticates.

Mattie loved reciting poems in which she did at churches all over the city of Indianapolis. People loved to hear her bring the poems to life making people laugh and cry.

Mattie also loves gospel concerts, yard sales, family gathering, music, dancing, shopping, working in her yard planting flowers, but most of all her dedication and devotion to her family was a huge priority.

Known as “Pookie” to close friends and family, Mattie departed this life on Thanksgiving Day November 26, 2020 at the age of all 91 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles H Cohen Sr., brothers, Blake Mosley and Reedus Herd, sisters Priscilla Herd, Betty Jean Steward, Lilly Mae Cantrell and Donna Lee Lyle.

Mattie leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, her children: sons Charles H. Cohen Jr. and Toney E. Cohen. Daughters Susan E Cohen and Teresa G. Cohen, sisters Annie Pearl Ellison and Patricia McGruder, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, family and friends. The family would like to thank Sandy Miller for being a good friend and helping our mom in her time of need, it was greatly appreciated and may God bless you.
