Mary Ellen Houghton died unexpectedly from complications from cancer at Methodist Hospital on Saturday, July 24th at 8:57am in Indianapolis, IN at the age of 70.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Jessica Sunshine Christian, Grandchildren Isabela Christian, Scarlett Christian and Mateo Christian; Austin, TX; Brother James Houghton Jr.; Crown Point, IN; Niece Dawn Plass, Great Niece Agatha Rogerson and Great Nephew Max Plass; Hudson, OH.
She is preceded in death by James and Alice Houghton (Jolivette) of Hammond, IN and long-time partner, Riant Alan McConnell.
Mary was born on February 26th 1951 in Hammond, IN to James and Alice Houghton. After moving to Indianapolis, Mary began working for the U.S. Postal Service. Her daughter Sunshine remembers her as a devoted mother who encouraged her always to pursue her goals. She was passionate about justice and taught her daughter equality for all colors, races, genders, and religions alike.
Mary was accomplished at the art of the written word and often enjoyed playing Scrabble and had a sharp eye for editing to perfection. She was a dedicated friend who deeply loved old and new friends with fervor. She loved to dance, was a lover of the arts, loved to listen, was free-spirited, whimsical and open-minded. She was an active and dedicated member of NAMI and often volunteered at the Indianapolis chapter.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, August 13, 2021 7:00pm in the Robertson Chapel at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, with a reception preceding at 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall with refreshments provided, featuring Mary’s favorites, popcorn and ice cream. Pastor Regina will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary’s life.
