Mary Ellen Crouch

Mary Ellen Crouch died in Indianapolis, Indiana of complications from Alzheimer’s. She was 86 years old.

Mary Ellen was born in Hendersonville, North Carolina to Ernestine Geneva Page and Oscar Madison Page. She graduated from Hendersonville High School and the Greenville General Hospital School of X-Ray Technicians.

She married James Robert Crouch III (February 8, 1936 – May 18, 2010) of Greenville, South Carolina in 1959. Together, they lived and raised their children in Fort Benning GA, Fort Riley KS, Charlotte NC, Columbia SC and Bluffton SC. 

Mary Ellen thrived at her long career in health care. She worked as an X-Ray tech, then as radiology department head at several hospitals. By the end of her career she was an expert in the rapidly changing technology of breast cancer detection. She traveled the South training techs when hospitals received new machines.

Weekends were always a family adventure with trips to our cabin, or a boat club, outdoor fun from the mountains to the beaches, water sports, blackberry picking… In addition to work and family she enjoyed volunteering for church work, PTA, Girl Scouts, coaching softball… A dedicated movie buff, Mary Ellen had lifelong unrequited crushes on Robert Redford and Clark Gable. She loved to dance, loved beach music. She adored her sisters.

But she was best known as a woman who really, really liked to have fun.

Mary Ellen Crouch is survived by her children Catherine Crouch (Kelly), Julie Bell (Jim), and James Robert Crouch IV (Tammie); sisters Liz Justus, Fran Shipman (Tom), Nippy Page (Jonathon), and Suzie Jobes (Charlie); grandchildren Julia (Tyler), Weston (Alexandra), Savannah (Stephen), Benson (Makayla), Kiersten (Andy) and Ian; great grandchildren Bronson, Leah, Andersen, Easton and Jimmy.

A funeral mass for Mary Ellen Crouch is scheduled for 12pm Saturday Feb. 15th 2025 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1559 Central Avenue, Indianapolis IN 46220. Please send flowers, she loved them. There will also be a Celebration of Life gathering in Hendersonville, North Carolina. [Details pending]
