Mary Elizabeth Thompson Smith departed this life on January 30, 2022, to join her husband, Ronnie Woods Smith, Sr., who preceded her in death.
She was born September 6th, 1936, to parents Easter and Tommie Thompson in Pine Bluff, AK. Leaving Pine Bluff with her parents, she would land in sunny California where she would run into a young sailor, Ronnie Smith, Sr., who she would lead on a chase for her heart. After a short, exhausting chase, he would ask for her hand in marriage. She obliged him by saying yes. They were married May 3rd, 1955, in Alameda County.
Mary and Ronnie moved quickly to expand their family. In July 1956, they welcomed a baby boy (Ronnie Jr.). Then they wanted to expand their family again and in 1958 they welcomed another baby boy (Tommie). Still wanting to grow their family for hopes of a blushing baby girl, they welcomed another baby boy in 1965 (Lorin). They continued to try for a girl and they welcomed a baby boy in 1968 (Derek). Giving up on that dream Mary raised her boys and traveled along side her husband from Naval base to Naval base.
After Ronnie decided to retire, she traveled with him and her four boys to a land called Indiana, landing on the southside of Indianapolis. After giving up on palm trees and nice weather, they settled into their home. The biggest surprise of her life would happen soon. Her prayers were answered and after a lot of cursing Ronnie out, she would welcome her OOPS in 1974 (Belinda). She would go on to welcome eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her five children: Ronnie Smith, Jr., Tommie (Shirley) Smith, Lorin (Tina) Smith, Derek Smith, Belinda (Columbus) Smith-Nelson, and her eight grandchildren: Lauren Smith, Marcus Smith, Tenekia Smith, Mariah Smith, Troi Smith, Elissiah Nelson, Braden Nelson, and Maecy Smith; her eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The wake will be Thursday, February 10, 2022 from 9:00 am until 10:30 am at Indiana Funeral Care, Greenwood Chapel.
Burial to follow at New Crown Cemetery, Indianapolis
