Marie Woodley Daniel was born in Rulesville, Mississippi on October 31, 1933 to Lucious (“LC”) and Mattie Woodley, who preceded her in death.  She was the first born with four brothers, Bill, Otis (“OL”), Herman and Theopolis (“Butch”) who also preceded her in death.  Levon Highbaugh and Doris Jean Kendrick are Marie Daniel’s last remaining siblings.

Marie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age in Mississippi.  Her family moved to Gary, Indiana where she attended Gary Roosevelt High School.  Marie married (1952 – 1981) Emery Preston Daniel Sr. and later moved to Indianapolis.  She was the proud mother of four sons, Emery P. Daniel, Jr., Willie Oliver Daniel, Darrell Eugene Daniel, and Andre LaVellé Daniel. Marie joined Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in 1953.  She graduated from Day Adult High School at Broad Ripple High School in 1974.  Afterwards, she briefly attended Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis.

With a keen interest in helping others, Marie entered the medical field and worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Vincent’s Hospital and as an EKG Technician at Winona Hospital, where she retired from in 1998.  Her church community was very important to her.  Marie had been a member of Emmanuel for 69 years and 7 months.  She served the church in many capacities such as the Culinary Committee, Beautification Committee, and Senior Missionary.

Always the cheerleader for her family, Marie always found ways to show her support by a kind word, a phone call, a card, or a delicious meal. While she wanted a daughter, she was proud of her four sons and would tell everyone, “My boys are good to me!”  She loved to travel and would often talk about the places she had gone.  She LOVED shopping, and not just for herself but everyone in the family.  She was a regular at “Hoosier Bargain Days” and known to all as a fashionista of the highest and always stylishly dressed wherever she went.  She loved to read and always kept up with watching her stories, “The Young and the Restless.”  Her signature reply after telling her you love her was, “I love you more!”

Marie Woodley Daniel departed this earthly life on Tuesday, February 15, 2023 at the age of 89 years and 4 months, peacefully in her sleep at Indiana University Methodist Hospital, after a seventeen day stay. 

Marie leaves to carry on her legacy four sons, Emery Jr. (Gwen) of Waukegan, Illinois, Willie Oliver, Darrell (Michelle), and Andre of Indianapolis; two sisters, Levon Highbaugh (David Sr.), Doris Jean Kendrick; four grandchildren, Earah Harris (D’Juan), Emery Daniel III, Twanette Harrington, and Tovia Allen; six great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; one special “daughter” and shopping buddy, Paula Daniel; and her many “adopted” sons and daughters from her Emmanuel Church family.
