Lois Patricia Smith

Lois Patricia Smith, age 91, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 17, 1929, in Anderson, Indiana, to Walter and Anna (Salin) Johnson. She was their firstborn. She was raised in Anderson, where she graduated high school. She received a scholarship to attend nursing school at St. John’s Hospital in Anderson. There she was trained by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She often spoke of the great quality of their training. After graduating in 1950, she moved to New York City and worked as a research nurse in the Otolaryngology Department at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

In 1955 she married the love of her life, J. Warren B. Smith of New York. They were married for twenty-six years until his death in August of 1981. Her love and devotion to him remained strong through all the subsequent years. Their focus was first and foremost on their faith in Christ and then their family. They had two children, Lois and Warren.

After she became a mother in 1958, Lois turned her work from her nursing career to the care of her family. She took great pride in creating a beautiful home in Stony Brook, New York, and was a wonderful mother, wife, and homemaker. She instilled in her children a strong faith and gave a great example of kindness and compassion.

She was known to all by her beautiful smile and caring ways. Her favorite Bible passages were Psalm 91 and Philippians 1:21.

Lois was preceded in her death by her husband, J. Warren B. Smith; her sister, Ruth Burkhart; and her brothers, Paul Johnson and James Johnson.

Survivors include two children, Lois P. (Ralph) Buschbacher and J. Warren B. (Judi) Smith II; seven grandsons, Michael B. (Lauren) Buschbacher, Peter R. Buschbacher, John T. Buschbacher, Walter L. Buschbacher, David R. Smith, Joshua B. Smith, and Nathaniel J. Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Mary Louise Buschbacher, Josiah D. Buschbacher, Gideon M. Buschbacher, and Nathaniel P. Buschbacher.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday April 23, 2021, at Christ Community Church, Carmel, Indiana, with the Reverend Josiah Jones officiating. For those who cannot attend, the service will also be streamed live on Facebook live.

Burial is in Calverton National Cemetery in New York, beside her late husband, Warren.
