Lawrence M. “Larry” Lindley, 78, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on August 14, 2021, due to congestive heart failure.
He was born on July 5, 1943 to Merrill and Roselind Lindley in Lebanon, IN.
Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna, daughter Lori, son Byron, grandchildren Ian and Max, and sisters Merrilyn Bass and Diane Lindley.
Dr. Lindley grew up in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Indianapolis, IN, and attended Manual High School. He obtained a BA from Knox College, MA from Indiana University, a BS and PhD from the University of Washington, and later an MDiv from Christian Theological Seminary.
Larry was employed as a mathematician for 14 years at the Naval Avionics Center and for 19 years as Executive Director of the Edna Martin Christian Center. During his tenure there he was involved in the establishment of the Martindale-Brightwood Community Development Corporation and the Martindale-Brightwood Community Resurrection Partnership. He also facilitated the EMCC becoming a United Way organization.
Larry was an adjunct faculty member of Martin University for two years and of the Christian Theological Seminary for 20 years. He was an ordained minister and commissioned missionary of the American Baptist Churches, USA. He was an active member of the Cumberland First Baptist Church. While there, he served as a Deacon, a Mission Chair, and established the Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (C.O.M.E.).
Larry and Donna sponsored a Laotian refugee family. He made mission trips to Nicaragua and Thailand in conjunction with the Church of the Savior in Washington DC, twice to the Soviet Union with the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North American, and to Estonia with ABC/GI. He was also active with Bread for the World, participated in many CROP walks, and served on the board of directors of the Martindale-Brightwood CDC, the Community Outreach Ministry Eastside, the Community Choice Federal Credit Union, the Martindale-Brightwood Community Resurrection Partnership, the Tech High School Community Council, ABC/Indiana Ministers Council, the Indiana CROP Executive Board, Cumberland Arts, the Sugar Creek Pennsy Trail Initiative, and Earth Charter Indiana.
Larry loved chocolate, Legos, photography, sunflowers, day lilies, and a million other things. He also wrote a science fiction novel.
