Larry Edward Fortner

Larry E. Fortner, 70, Indianapolis, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on December 18, 2020.
Larry was born and raised in North Carolina. He graduated AB Tech in Asheville, North Carolina in 1970 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He accepted a position with Bell Laboratories (Avaya) in June 1970 and moved to Indianapolis. He received many awards for the work he completed in the labs, including several patents. Larry retired from Avaya in January 2002 after being with the company for 31 years. He began his second career as a school bus driver for Perry Township Schools. During his time there he drove a school bus, trained new bus drivers, and helped with safety equipment for special need students. He retired from Perry Township in June 2018.
Larry met his wife, Janet, at church in November 1970. They celebrated 49 years of marriage this past August. They lived out their wedding vows until the end.
Larry was a loving husband, dad, and Papaw. He loved spending time with his family, playing golf, cooking, watching IU basketball, and doing odd jobs around the house or helping neighbors. He had been a Sunday School teacher, church bus driver and AWANA leader. He loved watching his three grandchildren participate in sports. He was the grandkids personal taxi driver, along with several of their teammates. Above these things, Larry loved the Lord. He wanted nothing more than to see people come to know Christ as their personal Savior. Larry and his family have been members of LifePoint Church Indy for nine years.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Andy Gugle, and his three grandchildren, Jack, Joshua, and Kathryn, his brother Wade (Sylvia) Fortner (North Carolina), and sister, Lila Bailey (South Carolina), and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Nell Fortner.
Due to restrictions of Covid, there will be a private memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to LifePoint Church Mission's Fund, 8540 Combs Road, Indianapolis, IN 46237.
