Larry Lee Anderson

After a long decline with dementia, Larry L. Anderson, 87, passed away September 2, 2024, at Hoosier Village Health Center of Indianapolis. He was a longtime resident of Kenosha and Racine counties in southeastern Wisconsin.

 

He was born in Chicago, IL on August 14, 1937, the son of the late Alfred and Ellinor Anderson. His first year of school was in Edmonton, Canada, where during World War II his father supervised construction logistics for the Alaska Highway project.

After the war, the family lived in Berwyn, IL where Larry graduated from Morton High School. Larry graduated from Northwestern University with Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Business Administration degrees. At Northwestern he met Marilyn Weinkauf, a journalism student. They were married on June 18, 1960.

He worked as a mechanical engineer for the US Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base. In 1966 he began working for Abbott Laboratories in their Engineering Division. Later, he was promoted to Manager of Corporate Design Engineering. The family resided in Brighton Township, Kenosha, WI where Larry was President of the Brighton School Board for 18 years.

In 1994, Larry and Marilyn moved to the Town of Dover, Racine County, WI. Always interested in education, he served on the Burlington Area School District Board for the next 18 years. During that time, he worked with active community members to pass a referendum to build a new high school, grade school and improvements for other classrooms. He was instrumental in a multifaceted partnership among Burlington Memorial Hospital, Gateway Technical Center, the school district, the Burlington Hospital’s Wellness Center, Gateway Technical College, the City of Burlington and YMCA Camp McClean that led to improved opportunities and facilities for the entire community. He was inducted to the Southeastern Wisconsin Educators’ Hall of Fame in 2001.

Larry and Marilyn moved to Hoosier Village, a retirement community outside of Indianapolis, IN, in 2021 to be closer to their children.

Larry is survived by wife Marilyn Anderson, daughter Lori Schlabach (K. Blake), son Bill Anderson (Amy), five grandchildren, and brother Richard Anderson. He was preceded in death by his brother John Anderson.

Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, WI. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held Monday, September 9, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the Hoosier Village Chapel, 9891 Purple Plum Lane, Indianapolis, IN 46268
