Ken (as his friends and family called him) was born on June 22, 1936 to Jing He Yu and Quan Di Huang in the Han Gong Village, Toyshan, Kwangtung, China. From this far away beginning his life took him many places and afforded him many experiences. On November 28, 1959 he married Nancy Lai Ping Yee in Hong Kong. Ken had many different jobs and worked very hard to provide and support his family. He was in the US Army. He worked as a farm laborer, a grocery clerk, at a laundromat, a barber, and most famously, a great chef. Ken and Nancy founded and ran China Garden in South Bend for 5 years and the Hi Ho Chop Suey in Mishawaka for 20 years, retiring in 1997. Ken and Nancy’s hard work put their three children through college. Ken was a huge Chicago sports fan, but especially of the Cubs. In retirement you could often find him at home watching sports, or on his computer trading stocks, hoping to hit on the next big IPO. He would relax playing cards or watching movies. After his grandson was born, Nancy and Ken moved to Carmel. He always loved spending time with his grandsons, and told them every time how proud he was of them.
He is survived by his loving wife Nancy and three children. His son, Steven, and wife, Jennifer, of Holland, MI; daughter, Sharon O'Connell, and her husband, Derek, of Buffalo Grove, IL; his youngest daughter, Karen Madzelan, husband, Carl, and their children, Nathan and Noah of Carmel, IN; Ken's brother, Herbert Yee, and his wife, Kim, of Madison, WI; sister-in-law Jean Yee of Grayslake, IL, along with many nieces, nephews, and great nephews and great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jing He Yu and Quan Di Huang, an older sister June Hai Yee and his older brother, Teap Yee.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Kenneth's name to CurePSP, (www.curepsp.org) a non-profit dedicated to helping patients and their families, other caregivers, researchers, and other health care professionals in the hopes of finding a cure for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
