Kenneth (Ken) Perry McCune of Indianapolis died on September 28. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 47 years, Karen Schilman McCune. Ken was born in East Chicago, Indiana, to John McCune and Ruth Koepp and raised in Hammond before moving to Rocky River, Ohio. After graduation from Miami University (Ohio), he joined The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, eventually accepting a position that returned him to his Hoosier roots. After 30 years in the corporate world he elected to switch to non-profits. He returned to school earning dual Masters degrees in Library Science and Philanthropy. His second career included research and grant writing for small non-profits and working for the Indiana State Museum.
His philanthropic studies, love of books, and faith drove his retirement activities; serving on councils/committees for Bethlehem Lutheran Church (including the co-development of a Stephen ministry program), the board of Grace Place (prison re-entry), and teams for Via de Cristo weekends (faith leadership building). His hobbies reflected his love of the natural world and fascination with the mechanical world. A life long love of trains expanded to include vintage aviation, automobiles, and Great Lakes shipping. Enjoyment for hiking, bicycling, canoeing, and bird watching led to exploring almost every Indiana DNR property, as well as many National Parks. But at heart he was a homebody. He was devoted to his wife, soul mate and life long adventure seeker. He loved hosting friends in his home, and was at peace and content with a pet in his lap.
Formal visitation will be immediately following his funeral. A Christian funeral will be at 2pm, Saturday, October 19 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 526 E 52nd Street, Indianapolis, 46205. Ken would rather see you comfy wearing a sweater, rather than digging out a suit him - so please do. A wake for visitation and celebration will be held immediately following in the church Fellowship Hall (about 3-5pm). Those uncomfortable attending the service are invited to simply come to the wake and share condolences or a story, and toast Ken over a beverage and some food. Lastly, a Youtube link for the service will be available on the church webpage for anyone unable to travel. In lieu of flowers please consider a gift to either Bethlehem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund (above address or on-line at https://secure.myvanco.com/YP7Q/campaign/C-ZA00?access=tile_direct) or to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation’s Children’s Fund through the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, PO Box 6134, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6134 or online at https://indyplfoundation.org/give.
