Julia Margaret Shane Engle

Julia (Judy) Margaret Shane Engle, 94, of Carmel, Indiana passed away on September 30, 2022.

Born on December 1, 1927 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Judy was the daughter of Tracy Ray Shane and Helen Columbia Pratt Shane. She graduated from Watervliet (Michigan) High School, class of 1946.

Judy attended Michigan State College and received a B.A. in Art Education in 1950. After working for American Airlines in Chicago, she married Donald James Engle of Constantine, Michigan on October 4, 1952. She was a busy stay-at-home mom who was active in her neighborhood, community, and church. She was adored by her children, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, and especially dear to her grandchildren.

Judy and Don traveled frequently throughout the United States and Canada. They took twice-yearly fishing trips to Cedar Rapids Lodge on Medicine Lake near Blackduck, Minnesota for 30 years. They were joined often by their family and friends.

Judy is survived by her sister: Mary Shane Dorr of Lawrence, Michigan; her children: Thomas (Pamela) Engle, Evelyn (Michael) Carpenter, and daughter-in-law, Virginia Engle; eleven grandchildren: Bethany (Brandon) McClure, Benjamin Engle, Rachel Engle, Stephen (Hanna) Engle, Daniel (Elizabeth) Engle, Andrew (Emily) Engle, Julia Engle, Caleb Engle, Mary Engle, Noelle Engle, and Thomas Engle. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Blake McClure, Eleanor Fox Engle; Katheryn Engle, Edmund Engle, Verity Engle, Benjamin Engle, Michael Engle, and Levi Engle.

Judy was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband: Don; her three brothers: George, Phillips and Robert; her sister: Ella Jean Elliott; and her son: Stephen Engle.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at St. Vincent Hospital, Wellbrooke of Carmel, and Compassus.
