Joseph Michael "Mike" O'Neill
January 24, 1943 — May 22, 2024
Indianapolis
Joseph Michael “Mike” O’Neill, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away at his home with his family at his side on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Mike was born January 24, 1943, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late John Kenneth O’Neill and Helen Josephine O’Neill. After completing his education, he met and later married his wife, Bonnie (Turner) O’Neill on April 3, 1970. Together they spent over 53 years by each other’s sides, raising their family and watching their children and then grandchildren grow.
Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, colleague and friend to many, who had many joys in life. He was known for telling jokes to his family and friends and enjoyed a good banter. He had a knack for playing cards, and of course the rules did not apply to him. Mike was an avid Notre Dame football fan and loved his mom’s fudge and his mother-in-law fried chicken, as well as a good scotch.
Mike worked at Arab Pest Control for over 45 years. With his gift of being a great conversationalist and passion for his work, he earned the trust, as well as, the friendship of many clients, and was beloved by his colleagues. The office was never short on pranks and sordid humor when he was around.
Mike was very much a family man, who looked forward to Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day and who was proud of his Irish heritage. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith and a faithful churchgoer at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mike’s greatest joy in life, however, was the time he spent with his family, especially his granddaughters, who brought him much entertainment with their singing, and dancing, and taught them how to play cards with him the “O’Neill” way.
Mike is survived by his wife, Bonnie O’Neill; daughters, Holly Jones, Courtney O’Neill, Dana (Daniel Carter) O’Neill; granddaughters, Emerson and Kayden; and he was loved by his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen O’Neill; his brother, James William “Bill” O’Neill; as well as his sister, Mary Patricia “Patty” Mennel.
A service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on May 30th from 5-7pm, with mass proceeding directly afterward. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.indianafuneralcare.com
