John Kevin Reed, 69, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 4, 2022. He was born December 15, 1952, to Charles (Chick) and Ruth Reed of Thorntown, IN.
John is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Brenda and son, Jason, a beloved granddaughter, Naomi, sister Donna Bevington (Rob), brother-in-law, Bruce George (Renie) of Saratoga Springs NY and a sister-in-law, Linda McCoy (Tom) of Knox PA along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Ruth & Chick Reed.
John graduated from Thorntown High School and Ball State University with a degree in social work and criminal justice. He received his master’s degree in social work from Indiana University. John spent his life helping others – working at Indiana Family Services (Firefly), Methodist Hospital, Fairbanks and Salvation Army Harbour Light. He retired from Aspire Mental Health Agency in 2014 as a mental health and addiction counselor. His final act of helping others was as a tissue donor.
John enjoyed golfing, bicycling, traveling and enjoyed six weeks of being a snowbird in Florida the last few years.
He was active at his church, Northminster Presbyterian Church as a Stephen Minister Leader and part of the Mission Team where he coordinated volunteers at the Westminster Food Panty each month. He was one of the founding board members of Gleaners Food Bank. He volunteered at the Fort Ben Golf Course as a ranger. He was proud to be a member of the ROMEO group (Retired Old Men Eating Out) each week after their round of golf.
There will be visitation Monday, July 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. John’s request is that attire will be golf casual.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Northminster Presbyterian Church or to the Indianapolis First Tee.
