John E Weeks

John Edward Weeks, age 82 of Fishers, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2020. John was born on March 21st, 1937 in Tipton County, Indiana, the eldest of five children, to Howard and Mary (Shuck) Weeks.
John grew up in the Kokomo area and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1955. He then attended Manchester College, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. During his college years John completed required courses to become a local pastor in the Methodist Church.
John married his college sweetheart, Patricia M. Sunderman, of Huntington, Indiana, in the fall of 1959. He then began his seminary training at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, later moving to Boston where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology in 1963. While at Boston, John was a member and served as Assistant Director of the Seminary Singers.
John and Pat returned to Indiana where they grew their family with daughter Rebecca and son, John Brian. John served United Methodist Churches for 46 years in the former North Indiana Conference. His assignments included serving on staff at Trinity Elkhart and Noblesville First. In 1968 he began his ministry at North Webster Church where he established a youth choir known as God’s Children. During his 7 years in North Webster God’s Children recorded 3 albums and toured throughout the country. In 1975 John and family moved to Kendallville Trinity, followed by pastorates at Plymouth Trinity, Hobart First, Decatur First, Logansport First and DeMotte United Methodist Church where he retired in 2005.
During his years in the pulpit John served on numerous Boards and Committees within the Annual Conference, his primary focus being in the areas of Christian Education and Conference Camping.
John made it a point to become involved and support whatever community he called home. He became active and provided leadership in the Ministerial Associations, in local service clubs and believed in supporting local church members and their businesses.
John became a member of the Masonic Cromwell Lodge 705 in North Webster, Indiana on 10/21/1970 and he became a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend on 10/20/1986.
In retirement John was an active member of the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club, Indianapolis, and the River Glen Golf Community in Fishers, Indiana. John was a member of the Indiana United Methodist Conference and faithfully attended St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Carmel, Indiana.
John will be greatly missed by family and friends. Survivors include wife Pat, daughter Rebecca Weeks Harter, son John Brian Weeks (Jen) and 4 grandchildren, Matthew Harter, Sarah Harter, John Daniel Weeks and Jordan Weeks. Also surviving is sister, Reta Slaughter; a sister-in-law Janice Weeks; a step-brother, Richard Walker (Dorinda); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Howard Weeks and Mary Weeks Walker, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Weeks and Janette Zyss; one brother, Howard L. Weeks; step-father Virgil Walker and one step-sister, Judy Cunningham.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Carmel, 4780 East 126th Street, on February 15th at 11:00 am. All persons are invited to a time of fellowship following the service.
