Joanne Church Jones, 79, born October 7, 1943 passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023 and was a resident of Carmel, Indiana. She was the daughter of Mr. William H. and Virginia F. (Tyrell) Church.
Joann grew up in Muncie, Indiana graduating from Muncie Central High School where she was a member of the Cheerblock for the Bearcats. She attended Ball State University in 1961 and later graduated from the Nursing Program at Marion County General Hospital (MCGH) in 1965. She taught there for 3 years and attended IUPUI to complete her Nursing Degree.
Joann met her husband, Robert S. Jones at MCGH where they worked together from 1965 - 1967. She worked as an Outpatient Surgical Nurse in Indianapolis for many years, including Winona Hospital, Methodist (Eagle Highlands), and Humana Women’s Hospital. She was Manager of Orthopaedic Surgery Centers for the Indiana Hand and Shoulder Center and the Achilles Foot and Ankle Center. She retired in 2015 after serving 12 years as the Director of Surgical Services at The Meridian Plastic Surgery Center in Carmel, Indiana.
Joann was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Robert S. Jones (Bob), her only son, MCSD Deputy Jeffrey S. Jones, brother William H. Church, Jr., sister in law, Cynthia A. (Jones) Champion and brother in laws’ Ronald Renner, Paul Aish, Richard Champion and George W. Jones.
Joann is survived by her devoted daughter, Angela J. Jones Harris (Carl A., Jr.), her precious grandchildren, Jada M. Jones Still (Jacob), Caige Harris, darling great-grand-daughter, Savannah Jane Still, her beloved sisters and brother in laws Mary Carroll Church Jones (Max) and Pat Church Brennan (Chard). She was also survived by many loving in-laws, Dr. John D. Jones (Linda), James S. Jones, Marilyn Jones Renner, Elizabeth Jones Aish, Mary Beth Jones, and granddaughter- in- law Cailin Rae Harris along with many nieces, nephews and cousins from both sides of the family whom she loved and adored.
As a not only a Nurse by profession, but also in her inherent nature, Joann was a provider and wonderful care-giver to others. Anyone for whom she cared for, whether it be a patient, family member or friend, would always reflect that she was the best nurse they ever had. Most family members and friends called on her to ask medical questions or ask for a good referral. She was an avid reader and at times would read 2-3 books a week. Some of her favorite authors were Nelson DeMille, Stuart Woods and Patricia Cornwell. Mom always greeted everyone with her beautiful smile. She and Bob loved to travel to lake homes in Indiana, Minnesota, Florida, Tennessee and Michigan spending time with family/friends where they shared a lot of fun and laughter. They enjoyed boating, bobbering, dinners, cook-outs, playing cards and tennis, attending IU and Colts games, the Indy 500 and many concerts at Market Square Arena, the Hoosier Dome and Deer Creek.
Joann’s most treasured gifts were her children and grandchildren. She never missed any of their school and sporting events, scheduling her calendar around all of them. They became surrogate parents to many of Jeff and Angie’s lifelong friends who still to this day have a deep love for them. Joann leaves an amazing legacy and will be eternally loved and missed.
