Janice M. Auvinen (née Sullivan), age 78, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, surrounded by family at Carmel Health and Living in Carmel, Indiana.
Born on September 5, 1946, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Janice was the daughter of the late Eileen (Brien) and Neil Sullivan of Dominion City, Manitoba. She attended the University of Manitoba.
Janice led a vibrant and full life marked by intellectual curiosity, creativity, and public service. She began her career with Reliastar Insurance as an HMO Consulting Manager and later worked as a senior consultant with Deloitte and Touche. She went on to serve as Vice Chairman of the Planning Commission in Leawood, Kansas.
Her passions included crossword puzzles, gardening, cooking, reading, and playing the piano. A talented figure skater in her youth, Janice also taught skating lessons and remained an avid fan of the sport. She had a deep love for history and traveled extensively throughout her life to experience the world firsthand.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James D. Mackay (1979), and her second husband, Thomas R. Auvinen (2016). She is survived by her loving daughters, Courtney S. Mackay of Carmel, IN, and Alexandra M. Auvinen (Christopher Mahurin) of Noblesville, IN; her sister, Maureen Sullivan of Winnipeg, Manitoba; and many extended family and friends across Canada and the United States.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the memory care staff at Carmel Health and Living for their compassionate care, and to Brighton Hospice for ensuring Janice’s final days were peaceful and surrounded by loved ones.
Her remains will be laid to rest alongside her husbands at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
