James Lawrence Durbin, 78, passed away at home on April 4, 2021. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on January 19, 1943, the youngest child of Earl D. and Luella (Bechert) Durbin.
Jim attended Cathedral Grade School, graduated from Cathedral High School and attended Marian College (now University).
He and his wife celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in January of this year.
Jim spent most of his work life at Durbin Service and Truck Rental, a job he never considered a job because he loved doing it.
His real passion in life was racing. He loved to drive so much that getting him to stop for rest on long trips was always a challenge. He was so proud that he had attended every Indy 500 from 1959 to 2019, all the Brickyard 400 races, F1, motorcycle and air races and especially the Eldora dirt races. He loved taking the family on camping trips to National Parks all over the country. His campfires were a work of art. He loved grilling on the patio in the summer.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his three wonderful sisters, Joan (Don) Gudgel, Peg (Carlo) Toffolo, Phyllis (George) Souviner, and his brother-in-law, Charles Farrell.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne (Farrell) Durbin, his sons, James M. (Stacie) Durbin of Mt Vernon, IN and Joel L. (Laura) Durbin of Pompano Beach, FL, and his beloved grandson, Atticus, his brother E. Don (Jeri) Durbin, Jr. of Indianapolis, his sister Marilyn, (Fritz) Feltman of Sun Mountain,NM, numerous nieces and nephews all of whom were dearly loved; his in-laws, Sheila (Lou) Rosenberg Indianapolis; Diane Farrell, Westfield, IN; Peg Farrell, Martinsville, IN; Larry Farrell and Martin Farrell, Fort Wayne, IN, old friends Bob, Bill and Leo.
