Gregory Dean Steward, 59 of Greenwood, was called to his heavenly home on July 1, 2020 following a 2-year courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 18, 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Donald and Barbara Steward.
Gregg is lovingly remembered by his wife of 18 years, Karen Steward and their three children Stephanie (Rick) Grimes, Tyler Steward, and Brandy (Zack) Bontrager, his father Donald Steward and his brother Brian (Terri) Steward. Gregg will also be forever remembered by his grandchildren Luke, Adam, and Andrew Bontrager, Callen Grimes, and Meadow Steward. Gregg was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Steward, mother-in-law Polly Hurst and grandson Carter Grimes.
Gregg graduated from Monrovia High School in 1979 where he claims to have been the star of the football team. He went on to pursue a 27-year career at Eli Lilly and Company working in the Data Center Infrastructure environment. Although Gregg’s career centered around IT, his true passion was being outdoors creating beautiful landscapes in his yard. Once he ran out of room to plant more in his own yard, it was not uncommon to find him working his way over to the neighbor’s yard. He loved to research the different varieties of plants, flowers, trees, etc. Over the past couple years Gregg had the opportunity to spend much of his time helping out at Anderson’s Orchard. The orchard gave him a place to focus on doing the things he loved which included hiding out under the peach trees. Everyone knew if you could not find Gregg, go check the peaches. Special thanks and appreciation to the Anderson family for giving Gregg a place to find peace in the midst of so much uncertainty.
As much as he enjoyed working in the yard, being at the orchard and, as he referred to it “putzing in his garage”, his first love and number one priority was his family. For Gregg, family always came first. He was a devoted husband, dad, son, brother, best friend, Pepops, Papa, best secret-keeper, loyal, God-loving, and an all-around amazing person. He never met a stranger and welcomed everyone into his life and home with open arms. His corny sense of humor was not only one-of-a-kind but was fondly passed down to his children. Greggs absence will be felt by many.
