Gordon S. Shedd II (Jr.) a.k.a. “Sonny,” age 89, died at home in Indianapolis, IN, after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Gordon was born November 15, 1932, in Indianapolis Methodist Hospital to parents Gordon Shedd Sr. and Sue Eastridge Shedd.
Gordon graduated in 1950 from Washington High School where he was one of the male cheerleaders from 1947 to 1949. He belonged to the Demolay Organization. He was in the Army Corp of Engineers from 1953-1956 and served in Korea. He received his associate degree from Vincennes University in 1960.
Gordon married Sandra “Messick” on September 1, 1956, at Speedway Christian Church. They have resided on Indianapolis Westside all their 66 years of marriage. They were members of Chapel Rock Christian Church for 49 years.
Gordon had a career in the HVAC field for 69 years. He Retired in 1996 after 27 years as Sales Engineer & Territory Manager with Bryant Headback Corporation. He served as a host in the Indy 500 Hall of Fame after retirement until 2006. Governor Otis Bowen honored him with the Bryant National Distinguished Salesman of the Year Award in 1976. The highlight of his career was designing the heating & air system for the President J.F. Kennedy’s retreat home in McClean, VA. in 1963, where he spent many weeks overseeing the highly challenging project.
Gordon was the #1 fan of the Indianapolis Colts. He enjoyed auto racing, photography, & was an avid reader of Military History. He also loved RV traveling and Camping.
He was involved in coaching football for the Ben Davis Little League in the 1970's. He was the #1 Grandpa Fan at his Granddaughter’s Basketball and Soccer games.
His nickname was "Mr. Fix It," but during the 4.5 years of chemo, he was known as "Mr. Superman."
Gordon is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sandy; son Kurt (Julie) Shedd, of Westfield, IN.; granddaughters Amy Shedd of LA, CA, Dana Shedd of Zionsville, IN.; sister Nancy (Nancy) Etscheid Denver, CO.; brother-in-law Doug Messick Clearlake, CA. Two nieces Amy Leggett and Brenda (Bill) Mole; three great nieces and one great-nephew; and Linda Graves Arnold of Sanibel Island, FL., who was like a daughter to him.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Jo Shedd.
Service will be held at Chapel Rock Christian Church, 2020 N. Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214 at 1:00PM with the Reception immediately following in Connection Corner.
