Dr. Glenn D. Moak died peacefully in his sleep on May 30, bringing to close a life marked by service to his family, his IU Medical School students and patients, and his country and community.
Born on October 2, 1925, Glenn grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He served in the army as an enlisted man in the closing months of World War II, and then again for eleven years in the Air Force as a medical officer. A graduate of the University of North Carolina and Case Western Reserve Medical School, Glenn did his internship in Internal Medicine at George Washington University and his residency in Radiology at Walter Reed Hospital. After his Air Force service and several years in private practice, Glenn joined the medical school faculty and Indiana University, where he taught for twenty years. At IU he was twice awarded the Golden Apple for outstanding teaching. Upon his retirement, IU Medical School established a Glenn D. Moak Excellence in Teaching award in his honor.
In a 2000 oral history interview with IU Medical School, Glenn offered these reflections on his career as a medical educator.
"My door was never closed to any student. They could come in and ask questions. And I loved the students. They were energetic. I never took roll, but they were always there. And this was a wonderful feeling for me."
He continued: "There's one thing: I made certain that the students learned - this is a thing I left out - that you've to say the three most unwanted words: 'I don't know.' This element of humility has to exist somewhere."
Glenn's wisdom and humility will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Carillon Moak, and six children/stepchildren: Richard Moak, Keith Moak, Suzanne Moak, Mary McConnell, Sarah Lawhorn and Ann Holbrook. To his eleven grandchildren, he will always be their beloved Grandpa Bear
A memorial service will be announced later this year.
