Gary Russell Shonk, a devoted husband, loving father, and proud Vietnam Veteran, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2023, surrounded by his family in Indianapolis, IN. He was born on June 27, 1949, in Indianapolis, to Wilbur and Thelma Shonk.
Gary was a kind-hearted individual who loved and supported his family unconditionally. After graduating from Emmerich Manual High School in 1967, he studied architecture at Purdue University. In 1968, Gary enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country until 1971 during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Gary worked as a Mechanical Draftsman until 1999. Gary then shifted his focus to the family business until 2018, contributing to its success and growth.
In addition to his dedication to work and family, Gary enjoyed woodworking, bowling, listening to his favorite music and working in his yard which has been humorously named "Shonk Park". He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 276 in Beech Grove, IN.
Gary's memory will forever live on through his loved ones. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Linda Shonk, who stood faithfully by his side throughout their journey together. He also leaves behind his son, Joe (Betsy) Shonk; granddaughters, Sierra and Lyndsey Shonk; and sister, Nancy (Jerry) Bice.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Thelma Shonk; and his sister, Betty Haussecker.
