SGT. Gary Lee Roy (67 years young) aka “LeeRoy” took his last breath at 3:37 pm on April 10. He lost his battle to “Agent Orange”. Gary passed away comfortably at home, surrounded by his daughters, son in law and his first wife, the mother of his girls, Cindy Leonard.
“LeeRoy” was born to Ernest and Edna Roy October 27, 1955. He was the 5th child of 6. His brothers and sisters are Peggy, Charles, Joyce Bales (Don), Sarah and Donna. He was proceeded in death by his parents and sister, Peggy. He had many nieces and nephews.
SGT. Roy was an Honorable Marine, an American Hero. He served in our military for 4 years. He fought endlessly for our Country. His final duty assignments and commands were, 7th Marine Regiment, ground combat for the 1st Marine Division, spent 11 months in foreign territory and he survived Vietnam. Gary earned the “Rifle Marksman Badge”, “National Defense Service Medal”, and lastly the “Good Conduct Medal”.
In his free time, LeeRoy loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, enjoyed repairing body work and painting antique cars and playing catch with his dogs, Sandy and Wolfie. He also enjoyed being outside working in his yard. Gary took pride in the decor and we all know that the yard always had to be mowed. He had the most beautiful plants and flowers. He also enjoyed painting on canvas.
Gary had many meaningful memories but there were four days that were the most important days, one was marrying his first love. As my father was dying, he gazed at our mom for several moments. At 42 years young, I witnessed and felt their love that they once shared. The second and third most memorable day was the days that his children were born. He became a father to Crystal Barnett (Paul) from Greenwood & Shauna Roy (James) from Pendleton. Crystal is a pharmacy tech at Community South, she adores her husband and their very spoiled cat and she loves crafting. Crystal has not left his side, not one time since he became ill. Shauna is Lead Teacher for Lawrence Township. She enjoys riding her Harleys, shooting and campfires. Lastly, I remember this day vividly, the day his one and only granddaughter Grace was born. He was in the delivery room shortly after her birth. One thing you may not know, Grace shares her grandpas eyes. When you see Grace, you see her papa. Grace Roy (Chase) reside in Fortville. She is a teacher for Lawrence Township schools, currently seeking her Bachelors in ECED and she absolutely loves making beautiful bracelets. She is crafty like her Papa, Mamaw and Aunt.
His employment tells us a story. “LeeRoy” loved trucking. He worked at Freightliner, Noblesville Street Dept, Carmel Trucking and lastly Heavy Duty Trucking. Gary enjoyed the open road and meeting new people. At times, you may have seen little Crystal with a smile on her face, sitting next to her daddy hauling in the big trucks. Together, they got the job done.
Visitation will be held the 21st day of April beginning at 11am-1pm and the service will begin at 1pm ending at 2pm. Crystal is inviting everyone to share a memory of her beloved Father, Marine. So please, bring your memories.
