Gary Dean McWhirter

May 29, 1953 — March 12, 2020

Gary Dean McWhirter, 66, of Indianapolis, Indiana, succumbed to cancer in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on March 12, 2020. He was born in Indianapolis on May 29, 1953 to W. Dean and Pearl McWhirter.

Gary is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane, sons Neal, William (Sarah), and Stuart, grandchildren Henry, Pearl, Gavan and Emilia, sisters Sherrel McWhirter, Karen (Thomas) Ferrara, Sharon Mueller (pre-deceased), and Donna Smith, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and good friends. Gary was a truly loving father, husband, and grandfather.

Gary was always the most charming person in the room. If you ever had the good fortune of making his acquaintance, he was not someone you could easily forget. He was always ready to dispense helpful advice for his friends, family, and just about anybody he knew. Gary was an actor, a photographer, an entrepreneur, and an early adopter of technology. He worked in IT for over 20 years. He was very involved with the Deaf community, spending years working and volunteering at the Indiana Deaf School and was an influential and strong supporter of the Bilingual-Bicultural initiative. Gary loved Music. The soundtrack of his life was eclectic—rich with Celtic and American folk, rock ‘n roll, big band jazz, and roots music of all varieties. Gary had a lifelong love of the theater, through acting, directing and always being an appreciative audience member. Gary and his wife Jane met at Indianapolis Civic Theater when they were just eleven years old. They married in 1973 and lived in Bloomington and Italy. They returned to Indianapolis in 1986, where they lived and raised their family.

A wake will be held at a later date. In lieu of donations, practice your civic responsibility and VOTE.
