Garryl W. Boyer, a retired Commercial HVAC Technician and life-long resident of Boone County, Indiana succumbed to COVID-19 on April 14th ,2020 at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon, IN at the age of 71. Tragically, due to pandemic restrictions, most of his immediate family could not be present during his final weeks and moments. His loving wife was present but could not view or touch him as he passed.
Garryl is survived by his wife, Virginia (Cindy) Boyer (Brown); his children, David G. Boyer, Steven W. Boyer, Julie A. Woods and grandchildren Nicole Stoner, Kourtney Heller, Megan Woods, Lucas W. LaFollette, Lydia Woods and Brantley D. Boyer. He is predeceased by his sister, Cheryl K.; mother Vivian R. and Father Wesley Boyer of Indianapolis.
Garryl was born in Indianapolis on September 14, 1948, the only living child of his previously bereaved parents. He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1967, and continued his education, earning a certificate from Purdue University at Indianapolis and then in the Local 440 as an apprentice in HVACR technology. He would go on to receive his 50-year pin as a due paying serviceman in that industry. His work was a great point of pride for him and he always strove to do his best for the various customers and employers he worked with and for over that half-century.
Garryl met his lifelong love of over 50 years, Cindy and they were married just before Christmas in 1967. They resided in an apartment and then purchased a small home in Indianapolis. The new couple welcomed children David in January of 1969, Steven in August of 1970; and Julie in May of 1974. When their daughter was two years old the family moved to Zionsville, where all three children were raised to adulthood. In 2008 the empty nest couple moved to Lebanon, IN, where they still own a home. They stayed in a handicap-enabled condominium on Indy's east side beginning in 2010. While living there, he was devoted to lovingly caring for his bedridden spouse as Cindy's primary caregiver, even though he was struggling with advanced Parkinson's Disease himself. When he was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer shortly after his 71st birthday and could no longer perform what he considered his sacred duty, the couple was moved into the same room in the care of Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon, IN. All three of his children and their families reside within 2½ miles of that facility.
If one word could be used to describe Garryl, it would have to be "unique". The runner up would have to be "frugal", or perhaps "practical". He was truly a one-of-a-kind individual. Many will remember his sense of humor and his passion for his various hobbies, including fishing, amateur radio, gun collecting and competitive shooting. He was an expert at on-the-spot engineering and making what many laughingly describe as "field-expedient repairs". Garryl was a hard-working, no-nonsense, humble, moral and God-fearing Christian. He was very generous to the various charities that he supported and was completely honest and transparent in all his business dealings. He lived out his values and conducted himself in such a fashion that made him a great example of the virtues of clean living. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
Because of COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, there will only be a brief graveside service with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. He will be laid to rest near the grave of his daughter-in-law, Dawn; wife of David Boyer, who went to the LORD on April 4th, 2020. There will be a procession on Monday at 1:30 from the funeral home, 8151 Allisonville Road to his final resting place in Lebanon, with a drive-by review so that attendees of the procession may pay their respects. The family request that in lieu of gifts or flowers that those wishing to pay tribute give a monetary donation to the American Cancer Society or Parkinson's Foundation.
