Emogene "Jean" Alfs, 95 of Avon, Indiana passed away on August 22, 2021.
Emogene was born on May 20,1926 in Columbus, IN to the Oris Stam and Inez M. Stam.
She married Robert "Bob" C Alfs who passed away on January 6, 2008. Together, they shared years of memories. Emogene was a 1944 graduate of Columbus High School. She graduated from Indiana University with a teaching degree four years later. Emogene was an Elementary Art Teacher which she wanted to do since she was six years old. Most of her teaching career and where she retired from was IPS School 92.
Emogene loved friends & family and being a part of the community including being a long-time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, IN. She regularly volunteered with the church art fair called Art for Religion and women's events. She was a volunteer at the Indiana State Museum. Emogene & Bob enjoyed volunteering at Clowes Hall. While teaching and many years into retirement, she enjoyed spending time with fellow teachers.
Emogene & Bob hosted many international exchange students. The students, their families, Emogene & Bob developed lifelong friendships. They traveled internationally to visit with the exchange students and their families over the years.
She was an avid swimmer and swam until March 2020. She quite enjoyed playing cards and continued to play until a week before she passed.
Survivors include: children: Gretchen Clark (Mike Guerra), Indianapolis, IN; Court Alfs (Camille), Avon, IN; Todd Alfs (Kristen), Ingalls, IN. Grandchildren: Cameron Clark, Olivia Pannell (Anthony), Taylor Alfs (Brittani), Isaiah Alfs (Trisha), Sarah Hutchens (Nathan), Austin Davis, Zachary Alfs (Emily), Genevieve Alfs, & Julianna Alfs. Great Grandchildren: Waylyn Alfs, Evie Alfs & James Pannell. Siblings: Wendola Thompson, Columbus, IN; Earl Stam, Columbus, IN. Sister-in-law: Carol Alfs, Albuquerque, NM.
Preceded in death by: Bob Alfs, spouse; Wanda Jones, sister, Oris & Inez Stam, parents.
Family and friends are invited to the "Celebration of Life" memorial service on Sunday, September 5th, 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your local hospice or Life's Journey Hospice Center, Avon, IN.
